Basing his conclusions on carefully culled scraps of evidence, historian Mordechai Zalkin states that until World War II, the underworld in Warsaw, Vilna, Odessa and other large cities was controlled largely by Jewish syndicates. By ‘our’ people.

He takes them out with two hands and makes room for them. The stories are spread on the table. Historian Motti Zalkin looks at the dozens of documents that he has brought up to his fifth-floor office and smiles. The characters who form the background of the history of the Jewish people are enfolded in photocopied pages, waiting for it to happen. He prefers the small-scale histories, Zalkin says. He is a historian who doesn’t like to deal with the central currents.

Dr. Mordechai Zalkin, senior lecturer in the Department of the History of the Jewish People at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Be’er Sheva, is sitting opposite shelves crammed with books. On the top shelf is a hefty collection of vodka bottles that he has brought back from his travels, during which he looked for documentary material on Jewish criminal organizations in Eastern Europe. His studies indicate that until World War II, the underworld in Warsaw, Vilna, Odessa and other large cities was controlled largely by Jewish syndicates. By “our” people.

Outside his office, workers are dragging a table along the corridor and whispering. The corridor goes on like an endless pipe, winding through a vast concrete structure, which preserves an academic silence, a late-afternoon tranquillity. Zalkin takes the conversation into the backyard of Jewish history, in mid-19th and early-20th century Eastern Europe. He spends a lot of his time there, trying to apprehend Jewish criminals who know no God.

Mystery man
The mystery surrounding the identity of “harodef hane’alam” (literally, the “pursuer who disappeared”) remains intact. The so-called “pursuer” belonged to the realm of institutionalized crimes that were perpetrated in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe 150 years ago. His identity was one of the communities’ best-kept secrets. His task: to hire mercenary killers to operate against people who threatened the community. He was chosen from within a small leadership group and only the group’s members knew his identity. The local leadership entrusted him with responsibility for the community’s internal security.

This man left behind a great many traces and thereby became an intriguing Jewish legend. “Every community of the time had its informers,” Dr. Zalkin says. “It was a profession — just as there was a rabbi and a shoemaker, there was also an informer. As long as the informing concerned only `small’ matters, everything proceeded smoothly — the informer earned his pay and nothing happened. The problem arose when the informers gave the authorities information that was liable to harm the integrity of the community concretely.”

This was why the communities established a security apparatus headed by an official anonymous “pursuer.”

There is very little documentation on the subject, Zalkin notes:

“The Slonim community in White Russia inserted regulations concerning the `pursuer who disappeared’ into their charter. The man’s position is also mentioned in the ledger of the Minsk community. In 1836 the body of a Jew was found in the river next to the town of Oshitz, in the Ukraine. The investigation turned up the fact that his name was Yitzhak Oxman. He was an informer, usually passing on information about Jews who evaded military service or tax payments. Some people in the community decided that Oxman had gone too far and that he, along with another Jew, Shmuel Schwartzman, had to be liquidated. The police investigation got nowhere. No one in the community revealed who gave the order to murder the two Jews, but the person responsible was probably the unknown ‘pursuer.’”
In another case, a member of the Jewish community broke under police interrogation, revealing the existence of the secret apparatus. Hirsch Ben Wolf, whose father was a well-known rabbi in Vilna, left home and converted to Christianity. The view was that a convert was liable to endanger the community he sprang from, so it was decided to kidnap Ben Wolf.

Zalkin: “In the police investigation one of the Jews testified that there was an apparatus within the community with the power to harm people and even to do away with them.”
While the “pursuer” remained in the shadows, Jewish underworld figures roamed the streets without fear. Everyone knew them, they even entered Jewish literature. In his work, “In the Vale of Tears,” Mendele Mocher Sforim (penname of Shalom Jacob Abramovitsch, 1835 — 1917) provides an exceptional description of one type of Jewish criminal organization, cruel and dark. In the novel Jewish mobsters use underhanded methods to kidnap Jewish girls from poor, remote towns and then force them to work as prostitutes.

This was a fairly common phenomenon. The Jewish society described here by Mendele is perverted and rotten. Sixteen-year-old Biela, from the town of Kavtsiel, falls victim to this well-oiled scheme. She was promised work in a household and one of the prostitutes explains what she must do: “The virgins of Kavtsiel are in demand here, and if they are clever and know why they are in demand, they end up getting rich and everyone is happy.” The innocent Biela doesn’t have a clue about what is meant, but afterward learns from the older prostitutes and the pimps how to be seductive and how to perform.

Dr. Zalkin is familiar with the phenomenon. He pulls a book by an American researcher from one of the shelves. The entire volume is about Jewish organizations that rounded up Jewish girls and sold them into prostitution. Zalkin says he can map the network of Jewish brothels in 19th-century Eastern Europe, but immediately reneges.

“That plum I won’t give you,” he says with pleasure.

Rubles and jewelry
One of the major episodes in which a Jewish criminal organization was involved occurred in Vilna in February 1923. It received unusual coverage in the local Yiddish paper. For four consecutive days the paper’s lead stories dealt with the events.

A Jewish gang that called itself the “Gold Flag” kidnapped a boy from a wealthy family for ransom. According to the police, the man behind the kidnapping, Berl Kravitz, had belonged to the Capone gang in the United States a few years earlier. Zelig Levinson, the head of Gold Flag, gave the green light for the operation to proceed despite objections by some of the gang’s members.

The kidnap victim was Yossele Leibovitch, a student in the Hebrew Gymnasium in Vilna. His father was a money lender. The kidnapping was done by Abba Vitkin and his assistant Reuven Kantor. The two grabbed Yossele as he left school, bundling him into a peasant cart. The ransom note sent to the family declared: “Money or death.” The kidnappers demanded 15,000 rubles plus gold, diamonds and pearls in return for the boy.

Yossele was held in Vitkin’s house. “The moment it became clear that a child had been kidnapped, all the forces aligned themselves against Gold Flag,” Zalkin says. “The Jewish community, the police — everyone cooperated.” A wave of arrests followed. Finally the gang decided that enough was enough and returned the boy to his neighborhood. That same day the headline of the local paper was “How the kidnapped boy was returned.” The sub-headline, Zalkin says, translating from the Yiddish, was “Yossele Leibovitch’s own story; 12 arrested, including the member of the Capone gang in America; how the child kidnapper was caught.”

The next day the paper’s lead story described how the police reached the kidnappers. The headline of March 1 revealed that “Gold Flag planned to kidnap another child.” The rival organization to Gold Flag was the “Brothers Society,” the federation of the Jewish thieves in Vilna — they even had a secretary who represented the society vis-a-vis the community’s institutions. One of the society’s missions was to provide legal assistance to members that were arrested and placed on trial, and to smuggle people who were wanted by the police out of the city. The Brothers Society was known for the original names its members were given — such as “Yankele the Pipe,” “Avraham the Anarchist,” “Tall Elinke” and “Arka Moneybags.”

“The thieves and criminals were part of the local folklore, part of the daily reality. The Jewish underworld was also reflected in song, in literature and in the press,” Zalkin says as he takes out a book of old folk songs and recites one of them. “There is music for it, too,” he says. “Here, this song tells about someone whose mother is a thief and whose father is a thief, whose sister does what she does and whose brother is a smuggler.” Looking up from the page, Zalkin explains that historians ascribe great importance to folk songs. “They spring from the actual situation, they are very authentic, a very important way to express social feelings.”

A report dated February 1905 from the Hebrew paper Hazman (“The Time”), which was published in Vilna, sheds light on one of the sophisticated methods of operation of the Jewish criminals. They seem to have had no shame. According to the item, Gershon Sirota, one of the world’s leading cantors, was robbed. “They did steal clothing and other items,” the paper states, adding that the thieves let it be known to the cantor that they were ready to return the property, on one condition: “That he pay them a ransom of 25 rubles in cash and pray in the synagogue twice out of turn … Because the prayer leader has been stingy with prayers and thus their profits were reduced and they couldn’t make money.”

Zalkin explains:

“They wanted something very precise from him. The thieves asked Sirota to give cantorial concerts in midweek, because on Shabbat people didn’t bring their wallets with them to the synagogue, and the thieves needed a crowd with wallets and purses. The two concerts in fact took place, the pickpockets had plenty of work and the cantor’s property was returned to him.”
School for thieves
Vilna was not an exceptional hothouse of crime. Organizations like Gold Flag and the Brothers Society operated also in Warsaw, Odessa, Bialystok and Lvov. Zalkin explains the context: The late 19th and early 20th century were bad years, in which the Jews of Eastern Europe did their best simply to survive. People didn’t know where their next meal was coming from, whole families were crowded into cellars the size of a regular room. Masses of people lived from hand to mouth. Whoever could, emigrated, mainly to America. Between 1888 and the outbreak of World War I, in 1914, two million Jews from Eastern Europe moved to America.

These people were driven not by great ideologies but by sheer want. At the same time, though, the want nourished the ideologies. “For days on end I was genuinely hungry,” Ben-Zion Dinur (1884-1973), a historian who was Israel’s education minister from 1951-1955, wrote in his autobiography, “In a World that Declined.” Poverty and a sense of hopelessness were fertile ground for people searching for a detour en route to making a living.

“People realized that they had little prospect of advancing on the normal track,” Zalkin notes.

“The major catalyst for the consolidation of the Jewish criminal organizations was poverty, poverty so profound that there was no chance to break out of it. The Jews had it even harder, because they were a minority within a majority that placed restrictions on them.”
Until World War I, however, Jews had been a key element in the population of Eastern Europe. “From a certain point of view, these were Jewish cities,” Zalkin explains. “For example, 50 percent of the residents of Vilna were Jews. Because most of the cities had a large Jewish population, it follows that the percentage of Jews involved in crime was also [proportionately] high. The biggest gangster in Odessa, a huge city, was none other than Benya Krik” — the same one from the title of the book by the Soviet-Jewish author Isaac Babel: “Benya Krik, The Gangster, and Other Stories.”

Jews could be found at almost all levels of underworld activity, from the individual thief to gangs that numbered more than 100 members. The large organizations operated in the cities, which they divided into sectors among themselves. Each organization had a charter, a clear hierarchy and internal courts, and its work was divided according to different areas, such as theft, protection money, prostitution, pickpocketing and murder. The art of crime was treated seriously, as it was a major source of livelihood for many people. Between the world wars the idea was even raised of establishing a school for thieves in Vilna. It’s not known if the idea was put into practice.

In 19th-century Russia the best place to rob people was on the roads. There weren’t enough policemen and there were a great many forests. The convoys that traveled the roads were easy pickings. Saul Ginzburg, one of the important historians of Russian Jewry, describes groups of Jewish thieves, whom he calls “toughs and predators.” After the heist the thieves slipped away into the woods. A typical gang of roadside robbers numbered between 10 and 15 men, who provided for themselves and their families by means of their booty.

One of the most famous roadmen, Dan Barzilai, a Jew by all accounts, who ran a well-known gang of thieves in the Warsaw area, was captured in 1874. His gang had 27 members, 14 of them Jews. They descended upon estates around Warsaw and attacked merchants’ coaches on the roads, making off with furs, jewelry and horses. A Polish researcher found statements made by the accused men after their arrest, as preserved in the files of the police. The statement by the accused, Yaakov Yankel, began as follows: “I am Yaakov Yankel from the city of Yanov. My mother Leah is still alive, my father died six years ago. I am 24 years old.”

Yankel went on to describe the robbery in the wake of which he was apprehended, along with seven of his accomplices:

“We were standing in the forest next to Glokhov, without going onto the road. We left the wagons in the forest, and two of us, Hershak the wagoner and Shlomke, and we eight went by foot to the estate. Dan and Lieber had three pairs of pistols and wore masks … First they started to smash windows … We stayed there for about an hour and filled up three bags with things and then went to the wagons.”
No end to information
Mordechai Zalkin has spent much of the past 13 years burrowing in Eastern European archives. They are his laboratory, the place where he looks for the remote margins of Jewish history and brings them to life in his academic work.

“When I work in an archive in Eastern Europe, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s in St. Petersburg or Moscow, one of the things that interests me is the collection of police files,” he says. “What used to be classified intelligence files are now open. The police collected information as part of their work, and when I open the files, from 150 years ago, I find detailed reports about Jewish criminals. The archives have enough material for 100 historians and for 100 years, and even then they won’t finish.”

Zalkin is respectful of every document he finds. “This, for example, is a document from 1820, from the archives in Lithuania,” he says, holding it up. It’s a leaflet, in Yiddish and Polish, published by the rabbinical and political leaderships of one of the Jewish communities, threatening a boycott of anyone who engages in smuggling or gives shelter to smugglers.

“At that time the Jews smuggled everything that moved and in some places the Russian authorities pressured the leaders to take action before they intervened,” Zalkin relates. “A leaflet like this shows that smuggling was a concrete social phenomenon that characterized the Jewish community, not a marginal issue.”
The task of reconstruction is long and arduous and ridden with disappointments. It’s only rarely that a lead turns up that can be followed, in the form of the description of an event in the local press, a detail from a book, a document of a Jewish community. This triggers an exhausting search for additional details and cross-references, with the constant expectation of the moment at which the picture will begin to clarify itself and metamorphose into a coherent story. “In the end it’s all stories,” Zalkin says. “We historians, like journalists, are always after a good story.”

The most exciting moments in the archives are not necessarily related to Zalkin’s specific field of research. Holocaust survivors and relatives of Zalkin who know about his work in Eastern Europe often ask him to look for information about their families. One woman, for example, furnished him with information about her older brother, who was a student at the university in Kovno, was taken away by the Nazis and never heard from again. “I knew which university he attended, so I was able to find his student file,” Zalkin says. “I brought the whole file to Israel, including letters he wrote, certificates and a photograph of him. It is very moving to hold a file like that in one’s hands.”

The Haganah connection
The Jewish mobsters in the United States are far more widely known than those of Eastern Europe and have been the subjects of quite a few films and books. The gangsters Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky have become legendary figures.

Ten years ago Prof. Robert Rockaway, from the department of Jewish history at Tel Aviv University, published the first important study of these criminal organizations (in English: “But He Was Good to His Mother: The Lives and Crimes of Jewish Gangsters,” Gefen Publishing House, paperback edition, 2000). According to Rockaway’s findings, the vast majority of the Jewish criminals in America were from Eastern Europe or the sons of immigrants from there. They did not continue a tradition of crime, but created a home-grown tradition in their new homeland.

Generally, the reason for their criminal activity was not to obtain bread, but butter. Most of the Jewish criminals in the U.S. were from working-class families and grasped at a very early age that hard work was not a recipe for economic advancement. They didn’t have capital to invest, and the underworld offered a way to get rich quick.

Jews were among the biggest criminals in the U.S. at the beginning of the last century. “In terms of crime they did everything,” Rockaway says. “Drugs, murder, smuggling alcohol. They had no limits. A Jew, Arnold Rothstein, was the head of the New York underworld in the 1920s. He created the largest gambling empire the U.S. have ever seen until then. He controlled most of the gangs in New York, including drugs and liquor. Rothstein was the first entrepreneur in the U.S. who created a well-oiled organization to smuggle liquor during Prohibition.”

Another Jew, Abner Zwillman, ruled the crime syndicate in New Jersey for 30 years from his Newark base. As a boy he acquired the nickname “Der Langer,” “the Tall One” in Yiddish, or “Longy” in the Jersey version. Together with another Jew, Joseph Reinfeld, he ran the largest and most profitable contraband organization in the U.S. The two imported about 40 percent of the alcohol that entered the country during the Prohibition era. U.S. Treasury officials stated that between 1926 and 1933 Zwillman took in more than $40 million from his smuggling operation (more than half-a-billion dollars in today’s terms). He translated his vast economic clout into political power. In the 1940s, the mayor of Newark, three of his deputies and four city councilmen needed his approval to get the nod for their posts.

Jewish-American gangsters also helped in the struggle for Israel’s creation during the 1940s. In his book, Rockaway describes how an emissary of the pre- state Haganah defense organization (the forerunner of the Israel Defense Forces) approached Meyer Lansky, one of the major players in the crime scene in America, and with his intervention, shipments of weapons and military equipment were smuggled out of New York harbor, bound for Palestine. Lansky wasn’t the only one. According to Rockaway, other Jews from the underworld donated tens of thousands of dollars to the Haganah.

Members of the Jewish underworld are absent from the well-known narrative of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in 1943, but were involved in the day-to-day life of the ghetto, and their connection to the Jewish underground groups during the uprising is a fascinating episode. The Nazi Aktion to liquidate the ghetto was launched on the eve of Passover, 1943. When the Nazis encountered resistance they used flamethrowers to set fire systematically to building after building in the ghetto. On May 8 they uncovered the central bunker of the Jewish Fighting Organization, at 18 Mila Street. What is less known is that this symbol of tenacity of the revolt, the fighters’ headquarters, where the commander of the uprising, Mordechai Anielewicz, fought until his death, belonged to the Jewish criminal Shmuel Isser.

Prof. Israel Gutman from the Yad Vashem Holocaust remembrance authority, who took part in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising as a boy of 15, doesn’t remember Isser. “I can’t say that I spoke with a character like that,” Gutman says. “The underground was an ideological body which didn’t have anything to do with people like that.” On the other hand, Gutman definitely acknowledges the contribution of underworld types to the life of the community in the ghetto.

“The criminal organizations in the ghetto were somehow able to create an important mode of existence,” he says. “The ghetto lived from smuggling — above the wall, through the gates by cajoling the police, under the wall. The property that remained in the hands of the Jews was transferred to the other side [of the wall], and that is what the criminal organizations dealt in. It was a highly organized business.”
As for the fighting against the Nazis, Gutman says, the criminal groups “played a minimal role. Their main involvement was in smuggling, which was the ghetto’s key to life. They also employed a great many assistants. There was an underground economy in the ghetto — workshops, small, illegal factories, which created a survival base for quite a few people in the ghetto. The economic foundation that those organizations created helped support the community’s existence.” In his book on the Jews of Warsaw during the war years, Gutman estimates that 80 percent of the ghetto’s foodstuffs were smuggled in.

The professional smugglers — a euphemism for underworld figures — lived a debauched life in the ghetto. They made a great deal of money very quickly and became the social elite. They brought in luxury items such as sweets or other goods that earned them large profits. In the book, Gutman quotes one person’s testimony: “The smugglers had enormous revenues … most of them accumulated millions. The smugglers were the richest class in the ghetto and were glaringly set apart from the gray, meager and hungry Jewish quarter. The easy profits and the uncertainty about tomorrow led the smugglers to spend all their spare time drinking, visiting night clubs and in the company of women.”

In the end, the admired fighters and the members of the underworld liniked up. Based on their ideological approach, the members of the Jewish Fighting Organization did not build bunkers. Their basic assumption was that they would fight to the end, so no withdrawal or escape routes were planned (the other underground group in the ghetto, the Jewish Military Organization, led by the Revisionists, built a protected, well-equipped bunker with an underground passage out of the ghetto). When the members of the Jewish Fighting Organization found that they could no longer move about and hide aboveground, because of the Germans’ flamethrowers, they had no choice but to take cover in underground bunkers. The largest and best equipped of these fortified sites were those of the underworld.

According to Havi Ben Sasson, 32, a doctoral student who works at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem, the Jewish criminal organizations were part of the Warsaw landscape. In the course of a few hours of archival research and reading of testimonies, she was able to come up with a great deal of information: “At Mila 18, which became one of the symbols of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, a concrete connection existed between the Jewish underworld and the Jewish Fighting Organization,” Ben Sasson says. “In fact, that bunker was built by and belonged to people from the Warsaw underworld. It was a huge shelter, with a number of rooms, a power hookup and even a well for water. Tremendous amounts of food were stored there, which the underworld was able to bring into the ghetto, thanks to its connections with the Polish underworld.”

The leader of the bunker was Shmuel Isser, Ben Sasson says. He dealt mainly in the production of illegal goods, which were smuggled out of the ghetto.

“We have a number of testimonies about this from fighters who survived,” she notes. “Those who succeeded in getting out of the bunker definitely say that the bunker belonged to people of the underworld and that the fighters were received their like princes. Shmuel Isser’s bunker was intended to hold his family, which numbered between 80 and 100 people. It was one of the best equipped bunkers in the ghetto.

“Every self-respecting bunker made sure it had weapons for self-defense, and the members of the underworld were definitely self-respecting, so I have no doubt that weapons were stored there, too. That was why the Jewish Fighting Organization chose Mila 18. What happened was that the people of the underworld let the people of the underground into their bunker. According to testimonies, the underworld people also served as guides for the fighters. They were familiar with the ghetto even after it was burned and its form changed.”

This is actually a war of images. Dr. Zalkin wants to draw us a different social portrait. “What interests me is the ordinary person,” he says. “I am not interested so much in the great rabbis and the philosophers. I am interested in the society, the people. My studies go in that direction. As a social historian, I map and classify the society, and when I came to all the places that have to do with the social history of the Jews in the 19th century and in the period between the world wars, I didn’t have to go looking for crime. It was simply there, leaping up everywhere.”

In his Jerusalem home Zalkin has a large collection of books on crime. Criminals would never believe how much has been written about them. He himself isn’t sure what attracts him to these dark corners — to these dubious, often violent, characters.

“The assumption among researchers is that your field of study doesn’t necessary say anything about your inclinations,” Zalkin says evasively, but adds an argument that is both very mainstream and very provocative.

“In my view, what shapes the great historical processes is not the great figures, but the masses. You can ask of any historical study why it is important. Why is it important to study Moses Mendelssohn, or David Ben-Gurion? In my opinion, historical research is vastly important for shaping the contemporary consciousness of the society. What I want to say is that beyond my interest as a historian, the contribution of this research lies in understanding that, with all respect to us, the image that all the Jewish children went to heder [religious school] and studied Torah and were great religious scholars is mistaken or invented. My argument is that the Jews were a normal society.”

If this conversation had taken place before World War II, that argument would not have surprised anyone. Jewish society knew itself. “After the Holocaust,” Zalkin says, “there was an inclination to view the Jewish world through a rosier prism. Zionist historiography had a vested interest in drawing a distinction between the `new Jew,’ the pioneer-farmer, and the wretched, pale ghetto Jew who studied in the yeshiva and was a moneylender. The image today is that they were all righteous and saintly. But it just wasn’t so.”

Following is an excerpt from a book by a Jewish American author, A.S. Adler, regarding his research into the Taliban and the media coverage they received. Unlike professional Zionist Islamophobes, such as Daniel Pipes, Adler deflates the media hysteria surrounding the ‘evil Taliban’ with cool, calm research. He even comes from a religiously Jewish perspective.

In my estimation, the Taliban may have been the most demonized government in recent history. There are several factors I can think of for this: Firstly, they were an impediment to the upcoming invasion of central Asia, and part of the propaganda preparation before 911 was demonising the Taliban to pit public opinion against even before the terror spectacles. Also, they didn’t have the means to defend themselves in the international media. Lastly, their very nature of being a Sharia-enforcing government helped the propagandists, as attacking them would be part of the ongoing demonization of Islam that started earnestly in the 90s after the red peril flustered, to be replaced by the rising green peril the Zionists saw as their enemy number 1.

Needless to say, the propaganda was so good that even many (if not most) Muslims fell for much of the propaganda. Adler looked into the media reports regarding the Taliban pre-911, and uses human rights, UN, and news sources to show how the Taliban were maligned in relation to many of the accusations leveled against them:

Our concepts of free speech, concern for our fellow human beings and even just weights and measures are particularly challenged when we are dealing with people who speak a very different language, live a very different life and are so far away by almost any measure that it is difficult to communicate with them at all. The challenge becomes that much greater when these people are accused of heinous crimes by others who are usually looked upon as our social leaders. When these leaders actually launch an attack on these supposed criminals and begin to kill them by the thousands, the challenge for most of us could easily become too great to bear. This has been the situation with our relationship to the Taliban for the last several years — and particularly since the kamikaze attacks of 9/11.

Here too, the Torah requires us to act according to its precepts. All people are enjoined to set up courts of justice. In what court were the Taliban, individually or collectively, accused? In what court was the evidence presented? In what court did they make their defense? Where were the usual voices who call out for human rights — including the right to a fair trial — in the case of the accused Taliban? In Torah Law, the court of public opinion — the only court that has been operating here — is not sufficient to allow the systematic annihilation of thousands of people and the destruction of a way of life. But shouldn’t this be obvious – like the other Torah precepts discussed thus far?

Shortly after the events of 9/11/01, the author noticed several things about the Taliban that did not appear to be consistent with the generally negative view of them given in the US media . It looked as though the Taliban might be just what they claimed to be — genuine religious Moslems of very high integrity.

1. An article that appeared in the secular media about the last two Jews of Kabul.

The article was published before the attacks and was primarily a human-interest story. The last two Jews were living in an old but sturdy synagogue and were not talking to each other as a result of some personal disagreements. They reportedly went to the local Taliban officials with their complaints about each other. The Taliban reportedly did not bother them and the local children addressed the older of the two Jews — a man in his 60′s with a white beard — as Mullah Issak. The problem with this story was that the Taliban were being portrayed in the media as “extremists” and similar to the attackers in their orientation toward Jews. In this story, however, there was no apparent negative feeling between the Taliban and the Jews.

This was even more compelling because it was well known that the people in general in Kabul were in great difficulties, with tens of thousands desperate to have a roof over their head.

It would have been an easy matter for the Taliban to, God forbid, throw the Jews out on the street (or worse), and use the sturdy synagogue building and courtyard for their own purposes — to house Moslems, for example. That they did not do such a thing suggested that they might not only be lawful, traditional Moslems, who would recognize that the synagogue belonged to the Jews, but that they also did not look for a loophole in Moslem law that might still allow them to take the Jews’ property under an assumption of some special circumstances. This suggested that they were trying to be genuinely and visibly just and kind and that they recognized that traditional Jews are not a threat to traditional Moslems.

2. There were stories in the media that the Taliban had been successful in eradicating opium growing in the parts of Afghanistan that they controlled.

If this were true, it indicated that the Taliban might be qualitatively different from the political leadership in almost every other country — that they had an exceptionally high level of integrity and were far more resistant to the usual temptations that prevail in the opium business. This was also consistent with the view that the Taliban were traditional Moslems — who are well known to be against the use of intoxicating drinks. It was easy to imagine that Moslem law extended the ban on such drinks to a ban on the use of opium as an intoxicant.

3. There was an intense campaign in the media against the “madrasses” where the Taliban studied — to the effect that nothing but antisocial brainwashing (God forbid) could come from such educational settings.

These madrasses, however, looked like traditional Moslem schools. They also resembled the traditional Jewish Bes Midrash — House of Searching Study — where religious Jews learn our classic religious texts and commentaries, much as we have studied and learned for thousands of years.

It is very common for people who are not familiar with the culture of the Bes Midrash to ridicule it. Those who know the culture of the Bes Midrash from the inside have a very different impression. They see that it is a source of active kindness, of clear and precise thinking — a wellspring of God’s Peace in the World. It was not difficult for a religious Jew to imagine that the much maligned madrasses of the Taliban might also be wellsprings of Godliness in a world that often looks like it is running in the opposite direction.

A quick way to check on the Taliban — to see if they were just traditional Moslems — would be to see what they had to say for themselves on their websites. However, the Taliban websites listed in a current bibliography obtained from the reference desk of Yeshiva University were all down. .. Perhaps the work of overzealous hackers upset over the attacks? No! According to Harun Amin, then first secretary of the “Northern Alliance” mission to the United Nations, the US State Department took down the Taliban websites in April of 2001 — almost half a year before the attacks. (This is around the time the US started threatening war against Afghanistan – MZ)

Though confirmed by two other sources, no mention of this has yet been found in any publication or on the internet. The State Department would not answer questions about this when asked.

There are two major Jewish organizations that are famous for monitoring the world for anti-Jewish and anti-Israel sentiments: The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Wiesenthal Center. Their websites at the time showed nothing from the Taliban against Jews or against Israel. When contacted by phone, their research departments confirmed what had been found from their websites — that they had nothing at all on the Taliban against Jews or against Israel — though both had large files on the activities of Osama Ben Laden (OBL).

OBL had put out a “Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders” in February of ’98. Though it was cosigned by several people, and Bin Laden was in Afghanistan at the time, none of the known leaders of the Taliban had signed it. This , again, strongly suggested that the Taliban were traditional Afghan Moslems — long on good terms with traditional Afghan Jews — and not the puppets of OBL.

The opium question was checked using both US and UN official websites. With independent study teams and two different methodologies — aerial reconnaissance and on the ground surveys — both confirmed that the Taliban had almost completely eradicated opium growing in the areas that they controlled. At the same time, opium growing in the home province of President Rabbani of the “Northern Alliance” — the group with the seat in the UN — tripled.

The Amnesty International (AI) website was then checked — to see if there was any mention of large numbers of executions or other severe punishments associated with the opium eradication program. The AI publications for the last full year for which such data were available — the year 2000 (by the common reckoning — the corresponding Jewish Year is 5760) — did not mention any severe punishments associated with eradicating opium. The actual number of judicial executions for that year — given by AI as 15+, was only about 1/3 of the rate of judicial executions per capita in Texas under then Governor, George W. Bush and about 1/10 of the rate in Saudi Arabia.

This is particularly remarkable considering the situations in these three areas: In Afghanistan there had been nearly two decades of social turmoil, two years of terrible drought, widespread hunger, war on several fronts and the condemnation of the community of nations. In Texas and Saudi Arabia the people were relatively well off — at least as far as money is concerned. The Texas Governor became President of the United States and the majority of the attackers came from Saudi Arabia — none of them were Taliban.

The US had sent a small team to Afghanistan in the early months of ’01 — when it was already known by both aerial reconnaissance and a preliminary on the ground survey that the Taliban had achieved a tremendous success in eradicating opium growing. The team was to determine how the Taliban had accomplished this remarkable — almost miraculous — transformation. One of them, Mr. James Callahan, reported back that they did it by consensus of the elders connected with the mosques in almost every town and village. It was a sign visible from Heaven.– and the Taliban knew it.

So why didn’t the Taliban turn over Ben Laden — either in connection with the embassy bombings in ’98 or the attacks of ’01?

If much of their strength — in reality and in the eyes of the people — came from their careful adherence to Moslem traditional law, they could not turn over popular (and well armed) people like OBL and his close associates without a public judicial proceeding that satisfied both the letter and spirit of the law that they lived by. The situation was even more difficult: OBL and his associates had been a real help to the people of Afghanistan in their years of struggle against the Russians and their associates.

It may be that the US had no evidence against OBL that would stand up in a court — Moslem or American. (Indeed this was the case, and the Taliban wouldn’t hunt down someone without evidence of that person’s wrongdoing. This is why their demands for evidence were ignored – MZ) Witnesses might be afraid to testify, etc. This is a situation that sometimes occurs in the US in the case of organized criminals where it is well known that certain leading criminals are responsible for ordering murders but nobody is available to testify against them. In these cases, the government looks for some other type of crime — such as tax evasion — where the case can be proven with a less stringent standard of evidence. Many leading organized criminals have been jailed on such relatively light charges where the heavier charges — such as murder — could not be proven in court.

Perhaps, if the US leadership had been more patient in this case — and more respectful of traditional Moslem Law and the special situation of the Taliban — they could have come up with an effective way of dealing with OBL.(That wasn’t the plan though. The invasion was already planned and coordinated with the UK, Pakistan, and India, months before 911 – MZ)

What about the oppression of women under the Taliban? — Isn’t it true that they deprived women and girls of education and health care, that they deprived women of the opportunity to work and that they forced women to wear a burka in the street?

If you ask almost anyone in the USA what they think the first woman executed in Kabul after the Taliban came to power was executed for, they would probably answer “blasphemy or adultery”.

If you ask how long the judicial procedure was — from the time of the apprehension for the crime to the time of the execution, they would probably answer “a few hours to a few weeks”.

If you asked how long after the Taliban came to power in Kabul was the woman executed, they would probably answer “a few days to a few months”.

And what is the reality – as reported by the wire services — ?

The woman was executed for “beating her husband to death with a hammer as he slept.”

The woman was executed after a judicial procedure that took about two years– from the time of the murder to the time of the execution.

The execution took place more than three years after the Taliban came to power in Kabul.

The discrepancy between the reality and the media generated expectation in this case is suggestive of what one might actually find if one were in a position to investigate the other points in detail.

Would anyone imagine from what they “knew” about the Taliban that they opened several centers to train women to be doctors? They did!!

As for the burkas, it appears to be the case that outside of areas like Kabul, where a substantial percentage of women had gotten used to dressing in western fashions, women went on dressing the way they had dressed for decades, if not centuries — with their bodies, hair and faces more or less covered depending on where they were. In and around the home in the countryside, they wore a simple headscarf. In towns, they were more covered up.

The English speaking, college educated women in Kabul — who were often not only anti-Taliban but anti-religious — were the people who were most adversely affected by the Taliban and were the most able to communicate their troubles to the Western Media. These women and their Russian speaking counterparts were not, in so many cases, innocent beleaguered secularists caught in a web of religious oppression. They were, quite often, the very people who had been doing their best for over a decade to undermine the cultural foundations of Islam in Afghanistan. It would have been remarkable, in this light, if the Taliban had just left them all alone.

While the educated women – including so many who had been Russian collaborators — were very adept at manipulating the media, the very traditional women — who constitute the overwhelming majority of the women of Afghanistan — were almost completely ignored.

Thus far, based on a LexisNexis wire service and NYT search: No reported executions for adultery in Kabul or Herat during the Taliban Period; No reported executions for adultery in Kandahar after 1996; No executions for adultery by Taliban in Afghanistan after 10/02/00, A total of 4-6 executions for adultery 1/01/97-9/11/01 by Taliban in all of Afghanistan –equally divided between men and women. The most attention getting case – partly responsible for the reporter, Robert F. Burns of the NYT getting a Pulitzer Prize, actually involved the execution in Kandahar of a 40 year old woman with her 38 year old married stepson in late August of ‘96. This story, which included notices of several other executions for adultery in Kandahar and elsewhere in Taliban controlled Afghanistan, was published just after Kabul came under Taliban control. It was followed 6 weeks later (12/14/’96) by an AFP story that cited 3 males stoned to death in Kandahar and 4 males stoned to death in other Taliban controlled areas – all for adultery — in the prior six weeks. No other wire services report any of these executions in the stated 6-week time frame. It is likely that this AFP story is a garbled version of the Burns report, where people became men, men became “males” and 6 months became 6 weeks. Another garbled story, by veteran AP Afghanistan reporter Kathy Ganon, dated 3/07/01, mentions two women hanged for adultery in Kandahar two weeks before. Other wire service stories covering the same event – such as a UPI report by Amir Shah, on 2/24/01– say that the two women were executed for prostitution and “corrupting the society”. The combination of attention getting and garbled reports may account for the widespread belief that the Taliban executed many people for adultery in Kabul. The importance of this is that it suggests that the Taliban were careful to observe the rules of evidence in capital cases under Moslem law – four reliable male witnesses to the act of intimacy.

While we are considering media distortions, it is interesting that the full text of the post 9/11 interview between the veteran VOA Pashtun language journalist, Spozhmai Maiwandi, and the head of the Taliban, Mullah Omar, is still not in the public domain.

EXECUTIONS FOR SODOMY

Up to this point the author’s efforts here had been very informal – just following up on some of the more notable apparent contradictions in the media without any effort to do a thorough research job. Still, the results were brought to the attention of one of the leaders of a local Ethical Culture Group. This had been suggested by two active members of the group who were sure that their Leader would be very interested in these unusual findings.

As soon as this Leader heard “Taliban”, however, he didn’t want to hear anymore. He said that they had executed people for sodomy — something that the author’s informal research – not going back in detail to much before the mid 2000 opium ban – had missed.

The author then checked the Amnesty International Reports — their annual books covering the human rights situations in nearly every country in the world — going back to the Report covering 1996. A.I. reported that 5 men had been executed by the Taliban for sodomy in 1998. No executions for sodomy were mentioned by AI for other years.

When these five cases were examined in detail, it revealed that the A.I. Report had omitted a very important fact in describing the first three to be executed: A.I.’s own detailed case report stated that they had been accused of sodomy “with young boys”.

A more careful investigation using the LexisNexis data base for wire service reports showed that, beginning with these first three, a total of ten people were executed after having been convicted by the Taliban of sodomy.

What was particularly disconcerting about these reports was the way three of the four wire service reports on the execution of the first trio treated the story. UPI, AFP and AP all left out any mention of “young boys”. Only the Australian Associated Press, citing Reuters, mentioned this detail.

With the exception of a single source AFP story for an execution in remote Jauzjan province in June ’99, the only story of a Taliban punishment for sodomy that clearly involved relations between consenting adults, reported that the convicts had been beaten and embarrassed in public, with no reported maiming or execution.

This is consistent with an earlier report on how the Taliban would deal with sodomy. In a ’97 interview with veteran foreign correspondent Jonathan Steele, the Governor of Kandahar stated that there were three types of punishment for sodomy under Sharia law and the Taliban preferred the most lenient which involved blackening the convicts face with no execution or maiming. It is also consistent with the situation in Saudi Arabia, where a LexisNexis search failed to turn up any executions for sodomy between consenting adults in a period from 1995 to 2004. Of 33 cases of execution for sodomy found during this period, all involved sodomy with boys or predatory sodomy of some kind.

A possible explanation of the 17-month period of executions is that it centered upon a story of Mullah Omar, the head of the Taliban, trying to rid the Taliban army of young boys being used for sodomy.

THE 9/11 COMMISSION

On Tuesday AM 3/23/04, the staff of the 9/11 Commission presented a paper for the world to hear that included a statement that Mullah Omar of the Taliban is “an illiterate leader who was unconcerned about commerce with the outside world.” (This is one of the mildest of the Commission’s many inaccuracies and flat-out lies – MZ)

The author checked by phone with a leading US government expert on the languages and cultures of Afghanistan — the same Spozhmai Maiwandi mentioned above— who has been on the job for over two decades and who has had more than one interview with Mullah Omar . She made it clear that, as far as she understood, the Taliban leader was certainly not illiterate in his native language and that he had a very clear, brief and direct writing style.

The same sentence of that above mentioned 9/11 Commission staff document also states that Mullah Omar was “unconcerned about commerce with the outside world.” Are we to suppose then that the well known efforts of the Taliban to get Unocal and Bridas to build a pipeline were done without the approval of Mullah Omar? Are we also to suppose that former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, was mistaken when she stated in her presentation “the only thing the Taliban desperately wanted [was] international recognition”. They wanted the international recognition so that, among other things, the pipeline contractor could more easily get insurance. Without such insurance, the contractor — whoever it was — would not build.

At this writing, August 4. ’04, the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report,does not appear to contain any suggestion that Mullah Omar is an illiterate. He is described as being “reclusive” – though the only evidence of this is that he refused to meet with some non-Moslems. There were apparently no Moslems in the US diplomatic service who could meet with him. On page 251 of the Report, he and the Taliban leadership are described as being opposed to attacking the US. Despite 288 mentions of the Taliban in the report, there is also apparently no mention of their success in eradicating opium growing, let alone how they did it. This might have made it clear that Afghanistan under their governance was certainly not a “failed state”.

Communist Party has consistently sponsored the idea that the
Negro and the Jew should be at perfect liberty to violate any

of the German Reichstag building, January 26-28, 1933, was

As early as 1919, the Jew, Salomon Jaselmanns, incited a
Communistic uprising in Argentina in which—according to an
Anti-Comintern report of November 20, 1937—800 persons were
killed and several thousands wounded. Brazil, Chile, Argentina
and Uraguay have frequently been “taken for a ride” as a result of
showing too much “tolerance” towards those “officials” from
Soviet Russia who supposedly were preoccupied with trade or
“diplomatic” affairs. For instance the Soviet trade agency in
Buenos Aires, known as the “Yhuzamtorg” and led by a former
fur dealer—the Jew Alexander Minkin—had in its employ 1,506
such “officials” during the period 1926-1930, and all

of these were known Communists whose sole purpose in going
half around the globe was to spread the doctrines of Jewish
Bolshevism in South America. The ensuing and abnormal in-flux
of Jews was represented to the South American governments as
an asset—a point which Chile, at least, refused to concede. For
on becoming aware of the mass immigration of Jewish refugees
from Germany and elsewhere the Chilean Foreign Office, on
April 5, 1934, instructed all its consuls abroad not to visa any
more passports to prospective immigrants who might be
identified as Jews since the Chilean supply of Hebrews—”who of

ndeavors of Communistic Jews to dispossess Gentiles of their
property and nationalize it in the Judeo-Bolshevik sense, have
been observed in Venezuela, where during 1935 and 1936 the
seeds of Communism were carried to the native tribes. Workers
employed in the oil fields of the American Gulf Refining Company
then approached their employer with demands for wages of
$250 per month, annual vacations of one month with pay and a
free trip to Europe each year. The latter demand was the more
amusing and merely reflects upon the originators of these detailed
requests as those native workers were mostly illiterates who
neither knew where Europe was located nor what countries it
comprised, not to mention what languages might be spoken there
or how long it would take to make such trips to Europe and return.

This showed that the agents of organized Jewry under the
emblem of the hammer and sickle were at work to accomplish
even in such a small country as Venezuela the devastating results
that Jewish aggrandizement has executed thus far in the land that
was once the great Russian Empire. The police authorities of
practically all of the South American countries have become
thoroughly familiar with the Red activities of Moscow, and in
this connection the notorious career of Alexander Minkin reads
like a dime detective story. In his capacity as Soviet Trade Agent
General in Buenos Aires, Argentina and at Montevideo, Uruguay,
as early as 1926, he was in constant

conflict with the police on account of his incendiary activities.
The exceptional size of his staff combined with his extremely large
drawing accounts in various South American banks, furnished
sufficient proof of the plans of the Soviet crew for the South
American countries—most of which countries have now definitely
refused to become further infected with the Jewish-Communistic
virus.
In intimate connection with this Jew Minkin was an organization
known as the Procor—as reported by Keller and Anderson in Der
Jude als Verbrecher, page 137—an outfit set up to provide for the
settlement of Jews from the Soviet Union and whose members
were also known to the South American police authorities as
being associated with an organization named “Zwi Migdol” and
engaged in white slave traffic. Thus while disseminating the
Marxian-Bolshevik doctrine under the authoritative “Excellency”
Minkin, the other side of their derogatory mission was the
lucrative business of selling Gentile women in the South American
countries—in keeping with the immoral character of Jewish
megalomania.
After various raids on his offices in both Argentina and Uruguay,
“His Excellency” Alexander Minkin, in December of 1935, was
politely but firmly requested to let the “emancipation of the proletariat”
in the South American countries rest and to depart for
good for his native Russia. It was a stinging rebuke which he and
his perverted fellow Jews should long remember. A report under
date of April 7, 1936, from Anti-Comintern, Berlin, reveals that
among the effects of the Russian agent, Harry Berger—then in
Montevideo—were found circulars in the Portuguese language,
purporting to be nationalistic leaflets but actually inciting the
working class to simultaneous revolution in all the South
American countries. Mixed in with much tactical advice to the
organizers, in these papers it was emphasized for them to grant
special protection to the Jews of these South American countries
in event of a political upheaval. An identical exhortation to spare
and safeguard Jewish property had been issued—just to mention
one of the many cases known

—by the insurrection leader, Max Hoelz, of Saxony, in the course
of the communistic uprisings in Central Germany. Posters in the
Red sectors of internal unrest exhibited the following instructions:
“As soon as the Reichswehr approaches, the town hall
is to be set afire. The factories and private estates are to be
destroyed. But save the banks! The banks are not to be wrecked!”
Is any better proof than this required to establish that Communism
is a Jewish plot?
So it happened that the last of the South American republics
severed diplomatic relations with the Jewish government of
Soviet Russia, after the Brazilian revolts—which in 1935 alone
caused the deaths of not less than 150 persons and the wounding
of 400 others, and which were traced directly to the activities of
the Jew Minkin—whose preparations for still further rebellions
were thus definitely interrupted by the awakening of the South
American governments to such Jewish menace—race-conscious
South Americans say, “for good.” The background of the
“proletarian emancipation” has, in the South American republics,
been uncovered in its reality as the cleverly camouflaged Jewish
conspiracy it actually is.
Mr. Delgass, former president of the Soviet Union’s Amtorg
Trading Corporation in New York City, made a statement which
may be interesting at this point—in a speech on November 30,
1931—as follows: “In Countries which have recognized The
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, subversive activities are centralized
in the embassies, while in the United States and other
countries where the Soviet government is not officially recognized,
the general manager of the Amtorg usually is the chief of
the spy system.” With a statement like this on record, why was
the Soviet government ever recognized by the United States? In
no less degree have Cuba and Mexico been harassed by the Red
invasion. Both of these territories have their “Red Books, with
accounts of many deliberately planned attempts to break up
existing institutions and conditions. Most of these staged riots
have been directly linked to the activities of the Reds in the

Besides all this, at that time Germany, Hungary and Austria, were
inundated with a continuous flood of Soviet Jews, intent upon
carrying through in these countries what had already been so

Cohn, now writing as Emil Ludwig, then in Germany, and now in
the United States under contract with the Hearst press—also
biographer of President F. D. Roosevelt—summed up the common
aim of the Jewish literary and political intelligentsia at work
in those days in these words: “The breakdown of the old structures
of the three powers—Russia, Austria, and Germany—
means a considerable convenience to the leaders of Jewish

then it has become a matter of international observation that the
Jews, by means of left-wing politics, have learned how to acquire
control of the immense power inherent within the working
masses and to use this power for their own racial benefit, Russia

to disguise this aim under the pretense of extreme solicitude for
the poor, oppressed workers!

Jewry all over the world appeared to be fully aware of its racial
conquest following the period of armed conflict in Germany.
From Bombay, India, the Jewish Tribune, July 5, 1922, carried
the following gratified comment: “The German revolution is the
achievement of the Jews; the liberal democratic parties have a
great number of Jews as their leaders and the Jews play a
prominent role in high government offices.”
More pronounced emphasis, however, may be taken from an
attestation of the New York Rabbi J. L. Magnus, as recorded in
L. de Poncins’ Secret Forces Behind Revolutions, Vol. II, p.

How completely Judaized Germany’s officialdom had become,
may be easily estimated from the huge Jewish bureaucracy that
assumed power in the Reich after ousting its former government.
And with a Jewish population of only 1 percent as mentioned
before, the Jewish delegates to the Reichstag from the Socialist
Party in 1925 increased to 22 percent. In 1932, the Jewish
proportion in the Communist Party was 14.5 percent, and in the
Socialist Party 17 percent. A huge army of Jewish writers was at
work demolishing the Christian ideals of Aryan Germany, and for
a long period the Russian-Jew Karl Radek (Sobelsohn) remained
the most influential literary figure there. Willi Muen-zenberg, a
Jew, member of the Reichstag and editor of three radical papers,
did his full share towards inspiring Germany with the Marxian
ideals. A most comprehensive account of the all but complete
Jewish control of the spiritual and mental life in post-war
Germany may be found in Schulz’ book Jude und Arbeiter.
The London Daily Mail of July 20, 1933, asserted that during the
last epoch before Hitler rose to power there were 20 times as
many Jewish officials in the German government as compared
with pre-war times. And not only the political offices had
changed hands but also many of the civic chairs and appointments.

Anyone familiar with Jewish press tactics, realizes that the Jew
ridicules what he fears. The treatment meted out to the distinguished
educator Dr. William Wirt, of Gary, Indiana, by the
whole Jew-controlled press in America after his disclosures in
1934, affords an outstanding example of this, as also the persistent
ridiculing of the late Senator Huey P. Long. The same
treatment was accorded Hitler’s movement—then only in its first
stages—by the weekly Die Aktion which served as a sort of
literary clearing house for a considerable number of Jewish
writers. Its editor, Franz Pfemfert, referred to Munich—where
Hitler’s viewpoint had first taken root—as the “dumbest town in
the world.” But the extent to which the Jews even then actually
feared and hated Hitler’s National Socialism—which was based
upon Aryan conceptions, as opposing Jewish ascendancy— was
shown by their shocking murder, on April 30, 1919, of ten
members of a society for disseminating Aryan Science, among
them one woman.

This mass murder was committed by members
of revolutionary groups including the Jews Levine-Nissen,
Levien and Axelrod, in the courtyard of the Luitpold Gymnasium
in Munich; and the victims were robbed, disrobed and mutilated
almost beyond recognition. It was later ascertained that most of
the assassins were members of the “Independent Order of B’nai

Another outstanding figure in the process of Judaizing post-war
Germany was Albert Einstein, who, under the pretense of “Social
Service” instituted his “Internationale Arbeiterhilfe.” This huge
propaganda apparatus, built on Marxian principles, naturally had
